Ong Squad is the online alias of Canadian TikToker Ssonia Ong who started her social media journey in May 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown and has gained a massive following with her relatable stay-at-home mother content within three years. She is also active on other platforms including YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. She has established her own company, Ong Squad Media Inc., and serves as its CEO.
Early Life
Ong Squad attended Stanford University from 2000 to 2004, obtaining her BA degree in psychology. She then pursued a Master of Education course at Harvard University in 2004-05 and also completed her Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) from Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 2005-06.
Career
Ong Squad started her professional career as a Mental Health Counselor at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver in April 2007 and worked in that capacity for five years. She left her job to be a stay-at-home mother to her children and later became the CEO of her own company, Ong Squad Media Inc., in April 2022.
Her social media journey started during the COVID-19 lockdown when someone shared with her a TikTok video of someone lip-syncing and dancing to a Disney song, which she considered very fun. She subsequently joined the platform and started making Disney-centric lip-syncing and dancing videos of her own. Ong, who was a mother of three at the time and now has five children, soon transitioned into making relatable stay-at-home-mom content. However, it was a 25-second-long clip of the story of her and her husband’s college love, their wedding, and having children, told to the beat of Jason Derulo's Savage Love, which gave her the first viral fame. Three years later in early 2023, she was earning a six-figure income from her newfound pastime that was unthinkable to her when she had decided to be a stay-at-home mother to her children thirteen years ago. Interestingly, she had even appeared together with TikTok CEO Shou Chew in a video in April 2023 when the latter accidentally revealed her name Ssonia.
Daily Routine
Ong Squad spends the first few hours of the day preparing and taking her kids to school, following which she dedicates the day from 9AM to 3PM towards content creation and various meetings with her management team or brands for partnerships. She then returns to her family schedule of taking her kids to after-school activities, making dinner and putting her kids to sleep. She is thankful of the fact that her work is flexible enough so that she can scale it up or down according to her schedule.
Family Life
Ong Squad got married to her college sweetheart and cardiac intensivist husband when she was 21 years old. Since then she has welcomed five children. While she had long decided to support her children as a stay-at-home mother, when she got the opportunity to become a social media creator, her husband was "very supportive" of her newfound career and often serves as her hype man.
